Abarth 695 Biposto: 50 years on

You may have heard of Abarth as a racing car enthusiast, or more recently with its ties with Fiat.

Abarth gets its name from Carlo Abarth, born in Turin, northern Italy, in 1949. It wasn’t until 1952 that its association with Fiat begn, with the construction of the Abarth 1500 Biposto using Fiat mechanics.

Today, the Abarth Biposto is still make shapes in the world of modern-day motoring.

The Abarth 695 Biposto (pictured above) is a model based on the 50-year-old original, which had a 699.5 cc engine, max power of 22kW and a blistering top speed of 80mph (130kph) — fast for 1964, we assure you.

In 2014 the 695 Biposto features a turbo-charged engine, lightweight at just 997kg and does 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds. Not bad for a nippy little racer.

Funny thing about this car is that it lacks rear seats to give it a little more pluckiness in its racing ability. We like it.

Did you know Maserati is owned by Fiat Group?

Maserati is owned by the Italian car giant, Fiat. Born in 1914 out of Bologna, the luxury car manufacturer is known the world over for its lavish and prestigious selection of rides.

The trident is a symbolic emblem on the crest of the car manufacturer. There were five Maserati brothers who had an involvement in the automotive world from the beginning of the 20th century.

There names were: Alfieri, Carlo, Bindo, Ettore and Ermesto. All had an passion for building Grand Prix racing cars, as seen below.

The latest rip-roaring Maserati to watch out for is the unfashionably-named Ghibli S. Despite its ghastly name, the sports car couldn’t be more elegant (seen very top, above).
