Renault buys into Caterham sportscar venture

French manufacturing powerhouse Renault has now taken full control of a joint venture with Caterham to build a super new sportscar under both the legendary Alpine and Caterham brands.

An agreement has been known for some time, but only this week was it confirmed by Renault in a press release.

Excitingly for classic Renault enthusiasts, the new sportscar will brandish only the Alpine marque — no longer being sold as a Caterham.

The press release reads:

“Following a mutual agreement between Renault and Caterham Group, Renault has increased its stake in Société des Automobiles Alpine Caterham to 100%, following acquisition of the interest held by Caterham Group

“Renault will now continue to develop its own Alpine sports car to be launched in 2016, as initially planned. Caterham Group also plans to continue with its own sports car.

“The acquisition brings an end to the partnership signed in November 2012 by Renault and Caterham Group to develop and manufacture sports cars through a joint venture.

Other forms of cooperation could still be envisaged between Renault and Caterham Group in line with each company’s strategic policy directions.”

Rumours that the Crawley-based Caterham Group, which works in road cars and Formula One, were denied by the group’s boss Tony Fernandes amidst speculation on the company’s future.

Renault 5 Turbo still a dream rally car

Did you know that the Renault 5 Turbo was the pin-up rally car of the 1980s and is still an absolute monster in its own right today.

For kids in the 80s, the likes of the Audi Sport Quattro S1, Ford RS200, Lancia Delta S4 and Peugeot 205 T16 were beasts on the rally track in the dreams of many.

For those interesting in buying a classic Renault, I’d give Gumtree or eBay a try. As for selling your old Renault, I’ve found this site which seems to offer a good deal on them:
